Better Bike Lanes, Better Bread

Here's an interesting one from the New York Times. The Dutch, they ride around on bicycles. You can't carry a heavy load of 6 bags of groceries on a bike. They go shopping daily, or every other day, for their food, thus eliminating the need for large, factory-produced, processed loaves of bread that last a week or more. As a result, the market for fresh delicious bread flourishes and benefits all parties -- the bakery, restaurant and family consumers.

The Dutch are born and raised in bike culture. Another example - they are taught that when getting out of a car, you should always reach for the handle with the right hand, reaching across the body. "This forces a driver to swivel shoulders and head, so that before opening the door you can see if there is a bike coming from behind." Genius!
